I went to two of my dump banks last week after almost 10 skunks boxes. Was $125.00 shorted at one bank when I dumped. I got $122.50 of it back two days later after arguing with the manager, he "counted the bags" and that is what "he" came up with. The next day I went to my other dump bank, filled up the bag and after it was emptied started adding my halves as nickels and pennies. I complained to the teller to no avail and didn't think I lost too much. I figured it out later to be $7.50, so over $10.00 gone and found only 2 40%ers. Going it give it a few more months and either go to dimes or wrap it up.
I was told by somebody who works there "off the record" that the lazy incompetent girls who work there and hate emptying the machine that if they do not close the machine exactly the right way as designed, it will add up crazy and you will be gypped big time and 99% of the people don't even know it! So I have resorted to throwing a few halves in at a time to test the machine, if it fills the bag I quickly yank out any left in the hopper, cash out and come back another day. Yep this is fun!

That's why I'm glad not to be in it for the money. To me it's just a hobby, and not a greatly profitable one. I know I more than paid for gas costs this year, (if I had sold) with a couple hundred silvers, sure was fun!

Yeah it doesn't always go so smoothly. It's funny how much stress (we as a sub-culture) put on keeping this hobby secret as much as possible. Yet really for most coin hunters, this is not a get rich quick scheme, and most people would sooner give up than do it for months/years at a time. I started this back in August of this year and I've found a little over 25 ounces or so. Yeah that sounds good but at the same time I've also spent a considerable amount of time and gas as well as dealing with all the little hassles like being shorted or making tellers upset. I could have probably done the same amount of time at a part time job and made about the same amount.

At the end of the day we all have to ask ourselves the question, is it worth it? The only time I ever think it's not worth it are those weeks were I go overboard and feel like its a job. That's when I take a step back and remember it's all about the fun of the search.

And yeah, increasing volume is great, but you have to remember that it also increases the gamble factor.
