On Tuesday my 9yr. old grandson's third-grade class came out to our farm to learn about artifacts.
I am pretty sure every rock in the creek got turned over at least once! Over 35 kids plus parents.
It was great fun. We have an area that lends itself to such activities so we try to do this yearly.
This year I made a sand sifter on a tri-pod.
We sat it next to several large drifts of creek sand. The kids "loved" the excitement of sifting it was "treasure hunting". I am going to have to "beef up" my sifter....they "found" all the weak points in my original design...it almost did not make it! Whew.

As in the past, we invited a speaker/friend from the Missouri Dept. of Conservation to explain the importance of streams and how to combat erosion yada yada....the kids always love this part and ask wonderful questions.

We are extremely dry so no water was flowing.....😉 great for us rock hounds!

Here are a few pics. Have an awesome day!

That's really cool. And you got free sifter testing to boot. :icon_thumright:

Very cool, I do things with occasional classes on field trips from time to time I know the feeling of being bombarded with questions about every stone but it’s definitely not a problem love the curiosity and excitement never know what fostering that I interest might lead to in the future

Great that they got out and experienced the day.
Start them young and it will stick with a few for life (one can only hope)

I still remember 60 yrs back looking for points with the family.
Getting stuck in some sink sand along the rive,r and lost my rubber boot when they pulled me out. :laughing7:
Cherished times when life was simple.

Thank you for all the kind replies. It was a wonderful day with excellent weather which made for many smiles.
I was scrambling to grab tools to throw into their "take home" bags...most were picking up the limestone...had to make sure they all had a tool or two.
We try to make it a real hands-on field trip😉
