I hit the beach this morning right at sun-up, and no one else was there except a few fishermen on the pier.

The beach showed signs of a major New Year Eve's party, with lots of spent fireworks, party hats and noise makers strewn about.

I had the entire beach to myself and had high hopes of finding something good.

After about 20 minutes of detecting, all I had found were the things you expect to find after a big beach party - bottle caps and pull tabs.

And then another detectorist showed up, and he slowly detected to right where I was.

He wanted to talk, and told me he got the detector for Christmas and this was his first day on the beach.

I gave him some tips, and then said I needed to get back to detecting.

As he watched, I took about 10 steps swinging my detector, and then got a strong signal.

I dug down and found the bracelet shown below. It is quite heavy and seems to be a recent drop. Probably from a New Years Eve party goer.

The new guy came over and wanted to see what I had found, so I showed it to him and let him hold it.

He was pretty excited, and wanted to know some more tips, so I told him to just to start swinging his detector around where he thought the people might have been last night.

Then I went back to my own detecting.

Over the course of the next hour I found many party trinkets, noise makers, a few coins, a horse shoe charm, and several champagne glasses (I gathered up the glasses and took them to the beach restaurant).

By the time I left, there were 5 other people with detectors on the beach . . . most with new detectors.

I'm glad I got there early.

Nice bracelet Bill..
Are those blue things plastic or blown glass ?
Happy new year..
A bit windy this morning..
Bill

Those blue things appear to be blown glass.

It is not an expensive bracelet - they sell them at the Venice Art Center for $30.

But it is hand crafted.

Expensive or not, it is still very beautiful. And it is a free birthday or Christmas gift for someone special :)

I have a DFX 300 and I was looking to purchase either a Beach Hunter ID 300 or an excalibur II. I want to keep the DFX 300 and get one of the other 2 for the water. Since you own both and have experience with them, I would appreciate it if you could give me your opinion which one you prefer for water usage. Thank you for taking the time. The Professor

I like both the Whites BeachHunter 300 and the Minelab Excalibur II - both work great on the sand and in the water.

The Beach Hunter seems to find more small jewelry items and ear rings, and it goes deep. But the Excalibur finds more things outside of the immediate swing path - which is good because you don't have to be directly over something for the Excalibur to find it. But the Excalibur will miss small chains and fine ear rings.

So some days I'll use the Beach Hunter, and other days I use the Excalibur.

I've learned to trust both of the machines and would be happy with either.

In the water, the larger coil of the Beach Hunter will be harder to swing than the Excalibur, but if you are going slow (which is the only thing you can do in the water), it won't matter much.

I do belt mount both detectors and probably wouldn't use either one of them if they were not belt mountable.

The Beach Hunter 300 is available for about $300 less than the Excalibur's (new), so if budget is a consideration, the Beach Hunter wins.

I wouldn't want to have to choose between them, but if I had to sell one of the two, I'd keep the Excalibur. But I would definitely miss the Beach Hunter 300.

Thank you so much for your input on the 2 MD's. Have a very Happy and Healthy New Year and good luck on the coming year. John, The Professor, in Newport, RI,

Nice find!! We went out New Years morning also for four hours. There was hardly any trash on the beaches. Got 2 pennies, 1 pulltab & 1 beertop. At least I got some exercise.

Nice find on the bracelet, working around Sharky's? I haven't done any hunting yet this year, will start water working this week-end super low tide. "Have a Great Day and Year" :icon_sunny:

Yes, I found that one close to Sharkey's.

Went back out today and was skunked. Found nothing.

Too many people on holiday with detectors cleaning the local beaches.

Hope they found some good stuff . . . keep them excited about the hobby.

Now we'll need a few weeks of sun bathers and sun downers to repopulate the finds.

Those negative low tides coming this weekend might be good for finding a few treasures.
