I hit the beach this morning right at sun-up, and no one else was there except a few fishermen on the pier.
The beach showed signs of a major New Year Eve's party, with lots of spent fireworks, party hats and noise makers strewn about.
I had the entire beach to myself and had high hopes of finding something good.
After about 20 minutes of detecting, all I had found were the things you expect to find after a big beach party - bottle caps and pull tabs.
And then another detectorist showed up, and he slowly detected to right where I was.
He wanted to talk, and told me he got the detector for Christmas and this was his first day on the beach.
I gave him some tips, and then said I needed to get back to detecting.
As he watched, I took about 10 steps swinging my detector, and then got a strong signal.
I dug down and found the bracelet shown below. It is quite heavy and seems to be a recent drop. Probably from a New Years Eve party goer.
The new guy came over and wanted to see what I had found, so I showed it to him and let him hold it.
He was pretty excited, and wanted to know some more tips, so I told him to just to start swinging his detector around where he thought the people might have been last night.
Then I went back to my own detecting.
Over the course of the next hour I found many party trinkets, noise makers, a few coins, a horse shoe charm, and several champagne glasses (I gathered up the glasses and took them to the beach restaurant).
By the time I left, there were 5 other people with detectors on the beach . . . most with new detectors.
I'm glad I got there early.
