I found this today, at first, without my glasses, I thought it was a pentagram. But then I put my glasses on and saw the Star of David. It has no shank and has writing or symbols on the back, so I don't think it's a button. It measures 29.2 mm in diameter and is copper alloy. Any ideas as to what it is :dontknow:

I was heading that way also, but I didn't have a photo or a denomination. Interesting that Morocco, a Moslem country, used the "Star of David", even if it was somewhat anciently. Do you have a date, Bramblefind? The only reason I knew approximatly what it was is because I purchased one, some time back, just because it was interesting.

I agree with Bramblefind. Your coin shows the general look of a Moroccan falus dated between 1276 and 1290. The pattern changes slightly depending on the particular denomination, as follows:

1 falus: about 20 mm diameter
2 falus: about 22 mm diameter
3 falus: about 28 mm diameter
The dates on Moroccan coins are Hejira (AH) dates based on the lunar year (354 days) and starting when Mohammed was alive (about 600 AD). The AH1276 to AH1290 dates correspond to 1859AD to 1873AD. So your coin appears to have been minted in the 1860s.

More trivia,

The use of the Star of David in the Dodge Brothers logo goes back to 1914 and the first Dodge Brothers car built. It was last used on the 1938 Dodge...

Thanks Bramblefind, HPD and Mac :icon_thumleft:. I think that was one of the quickest "What is it" solves I've ever seen. I would never have thought to look up a muslim coin after seeing a "Star of David", I guess that just goes to prove things aren't always what they seem :laughing7:

PS. Thanks for the automotive trivia, stefen :icon_thumleft:, always welcome.

I am surprised it was minted in the 1800s. It looks pretty primitive, doesn't it? I would have guessed 1000-1200. Glad I didn't pay more than two or three bucks. It was in a box full of Roman coins, but I knew it wasn't Roman.

My first impression in the field, going by the look and the feel, was Medieval 13 to 1400's. But when I got home and cleaned it a bit, it felt more like 1600's. As I said before, there is no way I would have thought to look at Moroccan coins, maybe if it had been whole I would have eventually :dontknow:

Hey, what's a couple of hundred years amoungst friends? Especially in England. Interesting to find one in England. I found mine in a box of Roman coins being sold by a Meteorite dealer from Washington in Denver. Now, that is odd! I wonder if being broken in half has any meaning?

I did find a Turkish 1 Piastre a couple of years ago in the next field, it was of a similar age but like a modern milled coin and silver. I still have it, so I will post a pic of it tomorrow :icon_thumleft:. As for todays coin being broken in half, I did wonder if it was symbolic :dontknow:
