Initially, the image reminded me of a bearded Conquistador.

No markings on the back. It's just the indention of the front.

My recollection of a Spartan helmet is one with a 'closed face'; where the cheeks of the warrior are protected with armor--as differing from this image.

I'm guessing its a late 19th c Victorian revival piece. Stylized ancient warrior... Greek, Roman, Trojan, Spartan... whatever. It may have been a button front or part of a jewelry piece.
