Stamped Brass Shield

Hello All,

I dug this thin stamped brass shield. It's hard to tell with the corrosion but I think it's uniface. It't about as tall as a U.S. Quarter. Starburst design or similar in the center it seems, and writing around the top and bottom (a date, bottom center?). I'd love to have some help on this one. Everything dug in this field was mid-1800s, everything dating 1840-70.

I copied the picture into Powerpoint and adjusted the color and contrast. Like you I think I see some letters/numbers - but when I string them together they don't make sense to me. Afterwards I googled but found nothing close. If someone else doesn't ID it, look at it at a low angle in sunlight with a magnifying glass. One way or another I hope you get an answer - as your find has some history.

I am curious if it could be a fob from the Holy Cross School?


Note Added .. When I put it in photoshop and enhance it, it sure looks like it says H.C.School.

when I originally read your reply I didn’t see the added note. After close examination I think you’re right! I can see HC School and that school was founded in 1849 so it’s old enough for this to have been in a civil war site.

Not sure, but second letter looks like an “e” and the 3rd doesn’t look anything like an “h”.
The piece is just going to have to be cleaned up a little more and the right side is out of focus to id any of them letters.
