I need a hand with this one. It was folded into thirds when I found it--neatly folded...so I'm thinking it was discarded that way (and probably the final 1/4 of it still on the site somewhere). (The plow is generally not that neat when it gets a hold of something.)

The piece reads:

___EBR: LUDWIGS

EMMET

PROFESSIONAL

And the design on the right is a pine tree with the words "TRADE MARK" around it, and it is enclosed by a circle.

Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.

The pine tree trademark makes me wonder if it has something to do with lumber? A lumber company's name plate maybe?

Brass outer part of a harmonica. Probably 1880's-90's.
Look under makers in the link.

Gebruder Ludwig or Gebr. Ludwig

Best I can do so far.

Works for me!

that "EBR" combination at the end of a word or abbreviation can't be too common. I'd say you're correct--and I'm gonna mark this one as "Solved." The brass piece is the same width as a harmonica reed too.

Thanks, Wildrider. :)

You should have showed me that in the field yesterday I could have told you what it was. I have one of those harmonicas in my collection with the rest of my Appalachia musical instruments! ;D I did not become a Doctor in this field without picking up a collectible or two along the way.
