Stainless steel or pewter ring

Ring is heavy for its size - at first I was guessing pewter, but also leaning towards stainless steel. Definitely not silver. It is engraved, but no maker's mark. Found in a park about 2'' down.

Hey OZ,

Nice ring. What did it "ring" up as?

I'd have to guess it might be plated copper...it wouldn't be steel if you were discriminating iron. Def doesn't appear to be pewter from my side of things. I'd also think steel wouldn't be worth engraving.

Hey, good to see you on this site more frequently.

Mighty shiny for a ring that's been in the ground for two to five years, guessing by the depth. Just gotta get a pro appraisal? Keeper to be sure! Nice dig!

Rang up as a nickle (I use an Ace 250). I have found steel rings (magnetic) that also rang up as nickel or pull tab.

They do sell engraved stainless steel rings. Heck, you can even order one through Wally World.

Plated copper is also a possibility - one of these days I'll have to get a scale to weigh rings.

Great find, it might be white gold. Both my 14k (yellow gold) ring and my 14k (yellow gold) earring rang up as a nickel on my Ace 250. Take it to a jewelry shop and get it looked at.

It looks too shiny to be peuter or SSteel.

Platinum also rings up nickel on an Ace 250, but I've never seen platinum that shiny before. You never know though. My guess would not be plated copper though, because it would ring up higher than nickel.

Nice ring!

I keep coming back and lookin at the pix, I bet its white gold. :icon_pirat:

You know, I tend to agree with TreasureFiend now that I'm getting a second look. I hope it's real!

I just don't see a gold ring not being stamped. I need a new watch band so I'll stop by a nearby Jewerly store to pick one up and ask about the ring. Hopefully the smart guy will be in there as I brought a 14-KP ring in to have the miniscule stone tested and the lady said that KP stood for gold plated :P

For those not in the know it is karat plumb (must be 14K, 13.999999K won't do).

Took it to a jeweler and they confirmed there was no hallmark on it. They couldn't tell by looking at it whether it was silver, white gold or junk. They guess the hallmark (if there was one) was either polished off or cut off if the ring was resized.

I don't see why they couldn't just test it there while you were there... :icon_scratch:

I'm no expert but from what I've gathered, it's a quick and painless method of determining what metal the item is.

Um, so yeah. I don't know.

He was busy (the assistant was at the counter) so I didn't want to bother him at the time. I should get my own test kit anyway as I do have other unmarked rings, both possibly silver or gold. Some of the test kits seem to come with separate bottles to check for 10K, 14K, 18K etc. I think the silver test solution is simply nitric acid

I am going back there will all the stuff with stones in them to see if any of them are diamonds. I figure the teeny weeny ones have a chance
