Stainless or Sterling? Dinner or pastryware? Bottling/Wine? What is it?

Hello. I was visiting a friend of mine in MS and she inherited the contents of a dining room hutch from her grandmother. Among the items in it was this item. It is hollow. The handle is heavy (like a cake knife handle) and the item has graduation marks of 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, and 50. The 20 and 25 has what look like "use or wear" marks around them. I have no idea what it is. i was thinking something to do with specific gravity (float). Ice cream cone mold, something to do with bottling. I just have no idea. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

P.

Does the handle come off? I mean; is it "hollow" to the point something could be put in it? Like water that could be frozen?

I have no idea what I am talking about, I am just trying to figure out all purposes it could be used for so then I can do proper research.

Tnx for the interest. While you can see the "lip" where the handle/top "looks" like it comes off, in fact it does not. Or if it does, I pulled very hard and it would not come off. I believe the handle is solid (like a kitchen knife), but the cone part is hollow. Hope this helps...

The only thing I have seen similar has been made of wood. Same shape. Used for making jelly or perserves. The fruit was placed in a cone shaped basket and the object you have was used to crush it with. Similar in action to a motar and pedstal that old time druggest would mmake their compounds with.
And it appears to be staiinless steel from the shine. The numbers? Who knows?

My first thought was that it might have something to do with cocktails, searched and came up empty.
Second, same thought of a masher/crusher, but that wouldn't make any sense with the numbers that are on it.
So, then I thought of a Ice Cream cone form like below:

But, that comes back to; why the numbers? I will keep poking around.

I'm not sure what the graduated numbers measure... but maybe it's a mandrel of sorts?

Or... cone shaped strainer masher? Still - why the numbers?

I was trying to find anything that measures the width of a circular obect; but in a kitchen droor? Wierd.
Some things that came back on my search I will not even mention, teehee

Does it measure depth or diameter? I presume it is Metric, that would mean its foreign made. :icon_scratch:

Any batteries in it? :D

Does it come apart? Maybe a clue inside? Is it stainless steel or nickel plated copper? It doesnt look like Sterling. Will a magnet stick to it?

Mandrel... I looked at bracelet mandrels and the measurements are goofy, I don't think that's what it is.

In addition, considering the measured numbers are evenly distributed along the side of a cone shaped object I'm sure it's a indication for a straight line - not a volume measurement.

It looks like a Sugar scoop to me, numbers would correspond to cup measurements. As in; 25 for 1/4 cup and so on.

So r u saying it is a depth gauge, not diameter?

Note there are wear spots on the first 2 numbers.

BTW welcome to TN pjw73.

Big Cy... I'm saying it does NOT measure volume.

I can only see it measuring something that is linear - meaning... along the scale on the outside of it, or, the circumference... like a bracelet sizer.

IMO

Maybe it's a mid-wives tool, and the measurements are in centimeters? Don't know just guessing. Disgusting thought, if so, why in the dining room hutch? ???
