ceylon was the island off sourhern tip of india -- currantly its known as sri lanka. so it would not be unusual to find a coin from india there on my view --esp since alot of trade occured between them in the old days. (it would be like finding a canadian coin in maine --or a mexican coin in texas --these days -- while its not our "money" -- they would not be super rare items to find esp if they were uncleaned dug coins

mind if I ask how you got it ? was it a "find" --the dutch traded heavily with india -- a dutch vessel of 1700's era might have india coins upon her. PM me if you don't want to say in the open.

The design is definetly Indian. However, I could not find this exact one in my catalogs from 1700's onwards. There were a few that were close..........

Sorry could not ID it exactly, but definetly worth looking into!
