Found this today on an old home site that dates back to 1850 but I don't think this is as old. Problem is ...what the heck is it ? It is brass and in its original shape, it was about five inches in diameter on the open end and a threaded hole of about three quarters of an inch on the other end. It has what looks like a handle on side only and is decorated with what looks like a Victorian pattern. The handle is connected to the larger portion with what appears to be a rivet and not soldered. I know for some of you it is identified as scrap brass...but to me , I love my artifacts and the story they can tell...so,what the heck is it and how old would it be? Thanks for lookin, vn.

Looks like the remains of an old brass oil lamp.

Looks like the remains of an old brass oil lamp.

That's what I thought but I am used to seeing them with knobs and a cradle for the glass chimney. The decorated little strap handle also threw me in another direction???

Thanks Mudhut, you got me back into the right direction and found some info to nail the ID. Something along the lines of a Skater's lamp. This one gives me a pretty good look at what it should look like except my handle is a bit more attractive, although the base is missing on my dug example. Thanks again, vn

Village...
I just relooked at the photo with the ruler... and saw that the side I thought was centimeters is actually inches.
Now... are they separated in "halfs" on that > ?

Hence my "smaller guess"
