Looks like a tug loop or slide loop off of a harness.

I'm not so sure this is solved ...
considering the size of the item, also the shape of the one side.
I would keep poking around

So what possibilities would you like to offer up BB so he knows what direction to be poking around in? ..OR .. Perhaps, in your wisdom, you can do some exhaustive research and educate the world about this relic.

Thanks BradyBoy for the response..... I have spoken to a horse person also, and they also tell me it is a pullthrough loop, but they are now mainly made in leather which is more comfortable for the horse. They have told me that it follows the buckle, and the loose end of the leather strap after the buckle goes through this to hold it in place to stop the strap from irritating the horse.

I do believe that there were mounted troops on this site, although it is the first piece of horse gear that I have found.

If someone does come up with another option, I will definately look into it

God bless
Peter

Hi Trikikiwi, thanks for the photo and the reply  there were some Kiwis in the Boer War, so all is possible when it comes to the finds, but so far I have only found British and Boer stuff....

Kia ora Peter.
At the time of the Boer War, New Zealand troops were essentially, Britain's.
A majority of our saddlery and arms were provided from 'the motherland'.

New Zealand offers support

Premier Richard Seddon

On 28 September, in response to the growing tensions in southern Africa, Premier Richard Seddon asked the New Zealand House of Representatives to approve the formation of a contingent of 200 mounted riflemen to assist the Empire if needed.

Seddon hoped that such a display of colonial solidarity would deter the Boers. He believed that New Zealand was not only bound to Britain but relied on the strength of the British Empire for its own continual security. With only five members voting in opposition, the proposition was passed and the offer conveyed to London, where it was accepted.

The proposition was also widely accepted by the New Zealand public. With war apparently imminent, New Zealand began to hastily prepare the contingent to ensure it met the 31 October embarkation deadline that the British authorities had set.
