Excalibur II 1000, Xterra-70 x3, Garret ace 250,
Was out today in some old foundations hunting and kept getting
square nails reading as pennies and dimes. Found several large
dollar bill size pieces of iron and had them reading as halves and
dol. coins. These were in coal dirt with lots of ashes and cinders
mixed in.There was very little topsoil or clay.
Has anyone else had this problem? I tried turning down the
sens. down to 3 notches but still had the same readings.
The only thing we found was a sewing thimble and I guess you
could say it was a small find, but to the other half of the team
who loves to sew and make quilts it was the next best thing to
finding some old coins.

I think we all have had that problem...when my ace tells me it is a half....I become very wary..usually it is a large piece of metal, but if it isn't a mile deep I will usually dig it to see...HH

Most finds today were 4" - 6". The timble was right against a
small rock under the leaves.

I've had the same problem with my ace, But i dig just to be sure. One time it was part of an old knife and fork. Cool relics but not coins.

I use an MXT and it often id's the melted bits of aluminum around campfires as coins. I think all ID type machines get confused over some types of targets. The target ID is a best estimate scenario, not a sure thing. I have noticed that it never ID's coins as aluminum tho.
Also, I think you'll find that the more you get to know the machine, the better you will come to recognize the iffy signal that you should go ahead and dig. MY two bits.
