Found at a cellar hole site close to an 1828 Large Cent. It is brass and one and half inches square. My first thought was maybe a cap to an ink well? It has the remant of a hinge on one side and a small threaded hole on the opposite side of the center hole. Thanks in advance for any input on this one,
Jerry

I'm guessing ink well top. With a hinged lid (missing).

looks like theres a hinge cap missing
also looks like it woyld be mounted due to the screw holes

Yes Ohio Jerry stated the hinge is broken.

You will notice there is only one screw hole; not enough to mount to a wall.(a door bell would have 2 mounting holes) I believe the one large screw hole is to fasten the cap on this travelling ink well.
