Your item is a pot bail. These lifters were hinged in the middle and used as a handle for large cast iron pots. This was prior to pots having a "bail" or handle integrated. The pots had a loop cast into each side and the hooks on the end of your lifter would go into those loops providing a handle to lift and/or hang the pot on a crane over the hearth. Having the center hinged allowed the bail to accommodate different sized pots. Nice to see one in such good shape. Nice find!
Was gonna say " fisherman's friend " It was spring loaded, you squeezed it open, stick it in fishes mouth. It would hold his mouth open long enuff to remove the hook.......NGE
