Hello all, it's been a long winter for us privy diggers. But we are back at it again. Good to get out and throw some dirt, and hopefully throw some winter weight off:tongue3: Started out thinking we were not going to see any kind of "Use Layer" with this pit but we finally hit pay dirt with a very nice Blob Beer from Dayton Ohio. Don found a nice pipe as well. Most of the items were shattered due to the bricks that were tossed in. Those darn bottle bombs:laughing7:

Not a bad start for the season. We will be back out again soon so hope to have more pics to show you all soon. So be safe out there and never dig alone! jgas

Nice! I've always wanted to find an old privy to dig!
Did that skull in the bottom photo come out of that hole or is that just your digging partner?

I'm starting to get into dump digs, and I was wondering how you know where to dig for a privy? I wouldn't mind getting into that too, given the variety of glass and non-glass stuff hut and privy diggers seem to find. Is there a technique, or just environmental indicators?

Nice digs and yes, it was a long winter. Congrats on the beer bottle and intact pipe.
Wonder if the pipe made it into the privy on purpose or accidentally?

How awesome, always wanted to dig a privy and I would like to know too how you find one, what are the signs?

Wow! Dayton, OH is where I was born and braised. I'd love to have a bottle like that! Nice going!

And, yeah, please explain that skull. Is that Yorick?

WTG, Great start to the year JGAS. Any idea of the year on the bottle?

Very nice pictures:icon_thumleft:

Yes ,what is up with the skull and was he smoking the pipe. lol

Thanks for the replies everyone. That skull is our digging partner, our goodluck charm if you will, His name is Skull Duggery! I bring him along so that when people wonder by they see it and we strike up a conversation in hopes of digging their privies. It works some times. Finding the privies is not all that hard in inner city lots. They are usually placed near the back alley ways and side yards. Every now and again they are in the center of the yard but not often. You have to make or purchase a spring steel probe to shove in the ground what seems like a million times and feel for the glass or dirt strata, layering. It's unmistakable really. Then you are off to the races! We will be back out soon and hope to post some more goodies. The Beer bottle dates to the 1890's. Never found one from Dayton before so that was nice. Take care jgas

Good to see your digging in the dirt once again, nice beer and pipe find. :icon_thumright:

I still have a yearning to do it again but the body say's different, a constant fight between the thoughts and abilities. :)
