Best laid plans....
We were expecting to finish a small area way outside of the main scatter, just because we had found 1 coin in the past that was a random outlying find on its own. Our expectation was 0 coins or maybe 2 max. To our surprise they had done a 6 inch turn on this land at the weekend. We are now glad that our finishing of the main area was completed on Friday!
Bad news was it was rough as hell & if we had better options its not the conditions we would risk our ankles on. However, as we were there we decided to go over the main area at 90 degrees to the plough, so as to get into the ruts.
We had enough after 3.5 hours, finds were tailing off & it was tricky staying up.
The result was pleasing enough;

Lots more Roman Pot Shard came up.
9 Roman Coins (1 OK)
1 Roman Hob-Nail (our 4th from this field this year)

Those nails are very cool right down to the name. It's amazing how those Roman scrappies hold up over millennia. Nice work!

Looks like a great day to me. Lifelong dream of mine to dig a Roman coin--any scrappy would do!

Cheers,

Buck

I think I'd call any day with Roman finds a pleasing one! Nice finds!

Sure, we have just made it our norm. So lots of pleasing days.

The results of the day was pretty good. Lots of shards for the day.
There's stubble, corn stalks, then there's rough plough each have it's challenges. But rough plough or a choppy rough ground just makes for a hard hunt on the ankles and getting the coil down level. Congrats on toughing it out, and getting some Romans.

Without my spade as a walking stick it would have been near impossible. However, we would have toughed it out more if the find rate hadn't dropped to 1 coin in the last hour. Just not worth the struggle & potential accident.

Lots of pottery and more coins there! Wait till the main area is rolled flat and get the Silver! It's now on top.

Congratualtions on the nice finds! :occasion14:

Amazing stuff, Cru! Congrats. -Lisa & John

That is the plan, although unless the Cortes went over it, I was getting max depth with the perfectly flat & wet conditions, so I would have easily plunked out a silver at 7 inches or so.

You're right, i forgot your farmers don't plough very deep. You know ours do 10" to 12" by the norm.

We can only dream. A 10" is lucky to happen 1 in every 6 years or so.(if that)
