My daughter just purchased a house in Northern Va so I volunteered to help with some painting and repairs. On Sunday , I drove down to Spotsylvania to re-visit some sites I hunted 25 yrs ago. First I hunted a friend's property about a mile from Todd's Tavern and unfortunately found nothing but shotgun shells and horse shoes. I moved on to some trench lines near the Spotsylvania Courthouse battlefield and had some luck. First I found a fired 3 ringer then... a shell fragment...next find was the top of a shenkl shell percussion fuse...then i found a spencer carbine shell casing...then a dropped Sharps ringtail bullet and another fired bullet. I found some misc. iron including the small mule shoe. Not bad for a 3 hr jaunt in a "hunted out' spot. I moved on to another area in Stafford county where 20-something yrs ago I found 2 eagle plates and a US cartridge box plate within 30 mins and a friend had found a VMM ( Volunteer Maine Militia) buckle. I found absolutely nothing there this time. Oh well , at least I have a place to stay next time I head up to VA to do some hunting. Anyone care to join me?
