I found this old tea spoon among some things left to my wife by her grandmother who was in her 90s when she passed away. I tried to photo the markings on the back but it wouildn't come out even with macro. The markings are a plus sign, the initials W and R and a figure that looks like an arrow head pointed down but with the tip cut off. It was totally black until I polished it with silver polish and then it was nice and shiney. I know it's silver plated at least and am wondering if it is possibly sterling? I don't know how old it is but I suspect from the era of the 1930s or older?

Re: Spoon, sterling or plated?

Yes, that's it, I'll look it up and thanks. Monty

Additional info. It appears The Wm Rogers mfg co. made this spoon but no help as to the makeup of it. The manufacturer started as Rogers Brothers in 1847 and has changed names and hands several times over the years. I am guessing it is probably plated but it has very little wear over the years. Maybe grandma had it put up or something and it wasn't used much? Anyway, I'll stir my iced tea with it!I'd mark it solved if I could figure out how? Monty

I'm not 100% sure but I think the majority of William Rogers flatwear is plated.

That's the conclusion I reached. Granny was just like the rest of us, so poor she couldn't even pay attention. :D I can't imagine her hoarding real silver. Monty
