Donna (Nana40), Charlie, myself and my husband went out hunting today and this was the first thing I dug. It's kind of eerie looking to me. It was near the steps of on old burned down church.
It is 1 1/4" across. I can't find any thing that marks it as silver. It says Italy on the back.
On the front it looks like an 8 or B and a D maybe scratched onto it.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks and HH!

I'm intrigued!

My google search failed. ???

Google needs to add a search feature whereby you post an image, and it runs and identifies the object. :coffee2:

I'll take 1% of Google's stock for this idea.

Here's my guess:

The medallion was found at a Church; made in Italy; the face of a sorrowful/remorseful woman, surrounded by two wild, intoxicated men; three dominant women in the background demonstrating that the wild emotions can be controlled. The dominant woman in the middle has her left hand comforting the distraught woman. The wild men are reminiscent of Baccus.

The medallion belonged to a Catholic female alcoholic, who would wear it as an inspiration and reminder to stop drinking and living on the wild side. ::)

Bacchus was known as Dionysus.

* His followers were mostly women who celebrated in a rite that gave us the modern term Bacchanalia.
* Bacchus was the god of wine, relaxation, and intoxication.
* Bacchus is the son of Saturn.
* Bacchus is known to inspire madness.
* The Romans had a festival for Bacchus is celebrated on March 16 and 17.

The fact that the medallion was made in Italy is inconsistent with the idea of satanic celebration, etc.

The obverse is perhaps styled for an personal inscription. Those leafy branches were designed to frame a message, date, and/or name.

I think I need a drink! :icon_scratch:

Gosh that's a great idea. I'd ask for 2% though. I think Texan Connection is on the right track.

I've often thought the same thing

I think the medallion depicts Our Lady of Mt Carmel helping save the souls in Purgatory.

it exists. I have not used it but tineye searches the web for your image.

http://tineye.com/

I suspect it will only find this site since I would guess it is just looking for a file matchand not breaking down the image.

Thanks everyone. I'm not sure if finding it by a church is significant or coincidence. FYI it was a Methodist church. The old dirt road the church was on has been there since the 1820's. This area was a ghost town old mineral spring resort (c1820 - c1915). Many, many people traipse around this area enjoying nature and history. I really don't think this medallion is that old.

detector de metales, chirper97, trikikiwi: "Three Faces of Evil" - "Bacchus" - "Our Lady of Mt Carmel helping save the souls in Purgatory" - Thanks for these new leads to research. That's what this is all about, different people with different ideas.

TEXAN Connection: "Ya'll are in lousiana Right?"; No, we're in Alabama. Does this make a difference?

chirper97, Montana Jim: My searches have failed too. I usually don't post here until I've exhausted all my other resources. FYI here are a few good symbolic art sites.

Ramittz: "tineye searches" Thanks, I will try this.
