Sponge Rock ?

In one part of Wythe.County,Va. near a creek that feeds into New River I found a large area that the rocks look like a sponge. From hand size to car door size muddy brown in color,and very heavy.My first though was some type of volcanic rock,small to medium size holes all the way through.Looks like someone shot it with OO buck shot. This one area is the only place I've seen it. Any ideas ? It's all around one small pound,with raised edges.

WOW ! Coral,here in Virginia,out in the mountain boonies.
I would post some photos,but that land has also been "Posted" One idiot is all it takes.
