Yep ashtray. You sure do not want a hole in the side of a spittoon as the fill rather quickly :laughing7: Yikes

great id Erdspiegel

hey, how else would you empty a spittoon any way?
were the old brass ones in two parts or something.

this style could have been for the lady of the house, the bed ridden, the upper crust, or just when the floor of the house didn't have cracks. hey, maybe it had a cork?

i sure would hate to pick this thing up and use it...can you imagine reading the directions (i know people use not to have simple things explained, but it's funny anyway!)

1. directed the user to be sure hole is opposite....or risk....!
2. empty after each chew or risk....!
3. manufacturer not responsible for 'knocks on the head' if container is left in wrong place...!

i've seen many cigs smoking in the 'industrial' ashtray because they weren't put out completely. i've also seen a few coffee cups and drink cans with holes in the side, though much smaller!
