Re: Speaking of stone "heads"

That's real freaky cool. Are the pics on the corners the same one in reverse?, looks pretty symetrical from here.

I have some stone carvings from Africa referred to as 'pre Columbian' that are similar.

No, I just rotated the stone and took the pics... it is very symetrical.

... and searcher ... no the hole doesn't go all the way through...

Re: Speaking of stone "heads"

had a thought (ouch) the "bottom" looks kinda like it has been worn down.. could it have been used to crush/grind? double handed mano maybe?
if you grab the top with one hand and put the palm of your other hand on the "nose" and put your fingers in the "mouth" does it feel "right"?

Re: Speaking of stone "heads"

hmmm, efigy of a human face is a little wonky. I would lean towards a tool before calling it a face, bow shaper - shaft straightener, etc etc. I am curious about the 2 hole oposite each other at the point where "ears" would sorta be. That is fricken neat though. No doubt about it that it is not a natural stone.

Re: Speaking of stone "heads"

I think it might have been a item with a practical use instead of a
purely artistic one. Note that it has a whole right through it.

also I get this feeling that it would be suited to tie rope around.
Perhaps a crude version of an old anchor ?;)

It doesn't have a hole through it, nor was it found near water.? The "eyes" are just 1/4" indents - I kind of wonder if these holes used to have precious or semiprecious stones embedded in them.? If you look closely at "the nose" (I put these in quotes, because I am assuming it IS some sort of stone head - but who knows) there is a small, OBVIOUSLY chiselled hole, RIGHT in the center!

Re: Speaking of stone "heads"

Just thought I'd supply a closeup of the bottom...

is that some sort of glue on the bottom?

It is VERY hard (the whitish stuff) whatever it is!!!!!!!!? and what is that straight cut?????????????????

I have always felt this is something other than just a natural stone!? There are just too many weird things about it - and the fact that it was found near an indian burial, and - something I haven't mentioned - at the top of the highest hill in the area also reinforces my thinking that it's a stone head... of some sort - is it depicting a half man, half jaguar as in Olmec and Aztec mythology?? Quien Sabe!

Re: Speaking of stone "heads"

If there is a Indian burial site, I think its illegal to take those unless its private property; even then its most of the time illegal. Anyway, I would take them to a local Indian historian.(maybe someone that is Native American and still is in an tribe etc.) HH and awsome find Jonathan!

Re: Speaking of stone "heads"

Well, it was found near an undocumented burial site. :)

I showed it to archaeologists at the University of Texas at San Antonio - twice - the first group said "it appears to have been glued to something" the next group said it was entirely natural - which I have a hard time believing!!!!
