Found this one yesterday. It's a 1783 Carolus III of Spain half real with what appears to be letters "A.H." inscribed on it. Underneath the letters it seems to have the date 1818, also engraved. Not sure if it's a Love token or something else.

Thanks for the comments.

I joined more pics, maybe I'm seing things but it seems to be 1818
agreed 1818, love token would be the best reason, might be others though.

Yes but....

That’s called ‘graffiti’

If it were artful, then it would be a love token.

I'm not an expert on the subject, but I doubt everyone back than had the means or the skills to offer an artful love token. It could be anything but since there's a date on it it sure is personalized

I disagree with Crusader. I'd go with Occam's Razor: someone (probably a kid) very crudely scratched their initials and a date on a coin. Why make the leap to a "love token?" :dontknow:

Same way you made the leap to a kid scratching it on, just a hypothesis.

Right, it could also be a coded message from a spy for an Army to attack on Jan, 1, 1818.

Occam's Razor states that the simplest explanation is probably correct. I see zero evidence that a crudely scratched coin would be a token of "love" nor a coded message from a spy.

Whatever the purpose it's a nice Spanish Colonial silver find. Whoever scratched it wasn't too skillful but still had a reason for doing it...

I actually think those letters are the proof that Alexander Hamilton was still alive in 1818. Didn't want to say it at first, so not to piss you off.
Go read my post again and find the place where I affirmed it was a Love token before freaking out.

I believe it’s most probably a love token very crudely scratched on by a kid in love.

The reason this coin was defaced may have been for any number of reasons. :icon_scratch:
Is it a love token, or possibly a private message from one individual to another, we'll likely never know for sure?

Maybe some kid just thought, "this coin is almost worn out, so I'm going to scratch my initials and the year into it for posterity."
The same way that I used to scratch my initials and the date into trees, rocks and old brick buildings when I was a kid. :laughing7:

Someone with a knife and nothing to do.................” idle hands are the Devil’s workshop” as grandma used to say. Great coin. Keep in mind it could be random scratches and that you’re all just seeing things....... just sayin’, but I do like the love token theory, but the bored kid makes sense too.

Very nice! from memory Europeans write the numeral 1 that looks more like a 7...So I'm with love token or bored kid.

Yes, very possible. Could be pretty much anything.

I doubt it's just some random scratches. Have found many coins before, those look intentional.
