For those who asked, here's an update:

Of course, I just couldn't stay away from the spot I got the reales at yesterday.

I put in another 2 hours or so, and well.... no coins.

Oh well, doesn't matter though... it was a great day to be out... the sun was shining, wasn't too cold.

Anyway, I got a few good age indicators..... A nice, round hollow button, a thimble, and some bullets, three (one smashed) of which are definitely cap and ball (or flintlock), and some early cartridge bullets.

I'll be back and I know there's some more silver there waiting....somewhere!!

I'll keep you posted........

Rick

*edit: BTW, I gave the Reales and the Phoenix Button to the landowner today.

I didn't have to, but I thought it was the right thing to do. Who knows, maybe he'll give them back.

Anyway, it's not about having the good stuff...... it's all about the Thrill of the Hunt and that 30 seconds of YEEEE HAAAA!!!! I Found It!!!!

Excellent coins and relic finds! Tsgman

Well, giving back the reales wasn't quite so hard... The landowner is 72 and he's been a close friend for over 10 years. It's not as if they're gone forever, I'll get to see them whenever I want. Besides, I still have "carte blanche" to hunt at the site, anytime I want and judging by the first four hours out there, there's going to be many a goodie to be recovered there. Shoot, I haven't even used my 4x6 DD shooter coil out there yet to get in between all the iron!

Also, I figure by being up front about my finds from the very beginning, he'll be more open to letting me keep any future good finds. Technically, they do belong to him. B)

The ball button is sometimes refered as a Zouave button as they were the same type button used on the flamboyant uniforms of the Zouave soldiers of the Civil War. Also this type of button was frequently used on Cadet uniforms from military schools prior to and just after the war. They seem to turn up in CW sites fairly often and come in several different sizes. I would think the bigger one like yours was on a coat.
