Well, I spent most of the day detecting and hit three spots. First I hit the place where I found the 8 coppers thinking there may be some silver. There was! I walked and walked and walked then I had a nice target reading 80 81 on the T2. I thought for sure another copper,1786 silver! Then I found the third NJ from this site.

The second spot produced a large cent an Indian a few wheat's, a buffalo nickel and I think part of a shoe buckle. The third spot just a few buttons. One large dandy with some gold guilt still. Anyway it was a good day, plenty of sun!

Man you've really been killing it as of late! Good to know that the Spanish silver will ring up in the lower 80s potentially on the T2. I would've suspected higher but since I'm yet to find any I guess I wouldn't know :-)

Ahab, the silver is a half reale and reads slightly lower than a dime. It may read differently elsewhere depending on the soil conditions. I think I have pounded this site and maybe after a good plow there will be more. By the way love that shoe buckle!

Thanks Don it's my nicest to date. I found a more utilitarian complete one when I started detecting last fall but it didn't have the same nice shape as this one. You've been a coin killer lately. These T2s are really something when you get comfortable with what they're telling you. Headed out right now. Hopefully my hunt proves better than the crappy weather here :-)

Nice finds! Can you post more pics of that NJ copper?

Great finds indeed, let's see some close ups of the New Jersey and the Spanish if you can:thumbsup:

Nice finds. It's amazing how many of those half reales are holed. Any chance of getting a photo of the obverse of the NJ. Perhaps I can ID the variety.

Don, congrats on another good hunt, finding 3 NJ coppers at one site does happen, but not often enough :). You should get a CT copper out of there, they seem to go hand in hand at many sites. The Reverse photo you posted is a "D" reverse, so there was only one Obverse die that went with it and that is a Maris 6, so you have a 1787 Maris 6-D variety, Rarity 2 (Common) Adding it to the survey, look forward to more in the future....

doninbrewster, thanks for the comment. It is amazing, they must have had some worn out pockets. It blows my mind how I could find all these coins and only three buttons at this site?:icon_scratch: Oh, the obverse side is pretty toasty.

You had some awesome finds for 2013 wishing the same for you this year!

Hi Don, I did not know that about the Conn. I may have to look at the coins from this site again. I just looked at the red book and the Conn look like KG so there may be one or I will have to hit it again after a good till because I have hit this site hard. Thanks for the ID

Abe - some of the small, early silver will ring in lower than you might expect. On my F75 a cut piece registers in the 50s, and thin 1/2 reales can be in the 60s. Larger denominations will, obviously, come in higher. So don't be hung up on 80+. Hope you can walk over one soon.

When I first got the machine I was stuck on high tones. If it didn't read 80+ it was passed. Now I love seeing 70's . Buttons and small silver. The half dime I found last week came in at 76. But I hate those stomped aluminum cans they give such a nice tone lol...

Nice recoveries! You are having a great year. I use the F-75 and have dug enough Spanish silver with it to say that a half real will show up around 64-66, a one real in the high 70s and a two reales around 82. I can't believe anyone would ignore those lower numbers. A lot of tombac buttons, even large ones, will come in at the nickel range (32). On colonial sites I dig everything over 25 and will dig below 25 if the signal is ringing in "round" meaning a constant number from any direction.

Steve - I probably take things even further than you do. I pretty much dig every positive signal at colonial sites as many of the artifacts we recover come in quite low on the conductivity scale. Many smaller tombacs and buckle pieces as well as tacks generally come in less than 20. Many other items will read in the 20s like small flat buttons and even small gold coins as well as other things, but then you have to weed through all the small modern buckshot and other tiny lead. In the heavy iron a lot of signals will waffle back and forth between iron and non-ferrous, and in many cases the target turns out to be a keeper. A lot of relic hunters are cherry picking the higher tones, and the lower stuff is either being ignored or discriminated out. That's one reason Dan and I find so much at sites that have been hunted before. But when hunting "newer" post-colonial sites it seems that most of the lower toned targets are junk, so you can be a little more selective with what you dig on those later sites. But I can't over-emphasize the need to dig it all at the 17th and 18th century sites or you'll never know what you missed.

I hope i didn't come across like I don't dig lower numbers. If I'm on a colonial site I basically dig everything. I figure if it's that old it's got the potential to be a good target
