Hi there,

Does anyone know about pearls from Margarita island Venezuela (Nueva Cadiz)? I used to hunt the site many years back, and we sifted these pearls out of the throw dirt. One of the local collectors wants to sell his collection of finds but I have no idea about value... I figure the value is more historical than actual gem value, but I'm lost as what to offer.

Nueva Cadiz was a Spanish town and fort that supported the pearl trade, it was abandoned after the pearl fisheries died off... The pearls from the Atocha came from this area, and would be more or less contemporaneous to these. (The beads we found were late 1600´s to early 1700´s.)

............................Holy Mackerel!

I've always felt that if someone dredged up the old pearl beds that they might find thousands of pearls that accumulated over the centuries. It looks like I may have been right.

Contact Taffi Fisher. She has handled these things in the past and may be able to give you an idea as to their value.
