I went out with a friend of mine this week and found my first IH penny. I thought it was a 1886 IH at first but when I got home and cleaned it, it turned out to be 1896. I also found this 8 pointed star about 50 feet from the IH. After looking all over the internet I found something similar to it which is from the Spanish Colonial Army. Here is the link for the photos of that star. UNIFORMS

If anyone wants to chime in on what they think it is I would appreciate it.

Nice finds, It feels great to make a first find. Looks like a good place to hunt.

Boy I like that star and always love those Indian heads.congrats

Not sure about the star. Could I see a close-up of the back? Also, are there any examples that are brass instead of embroidered like the photo? Even a piece of brass would be made to look embroidered, which that one doesn't. See the photo of my oak leaf cluster in Today's Finds.

Way to go. Nice star, that IH is in real nice shape.

I agree that your eight point star is probably a Spanish Colonial Army Field Officer's uniform insignia, probably a souvenir brought back from the Span-Am War by a veteran. Here is a link to an outstanding website dedicated to the uniforms of Spanish colonial troops. I sure see a similarity to those depicted with your find. Congrats. Sub

The Indian looks to be in great shape:icon_thumright:

Absolutely not IMO. The ones in the photo you included are embroidered, not metal. This post should be in the What Is It section of the forum, not today's finds.

Buckleboy, this star is metal and not embroided. Here are some closeups. Also I found both of these at the same time that is why it is not in the whats it section. IMO no one ever hardly views that section like the todays finds section.

Ahhh, now your close-up changes things a bit! I knew your find was brass, that's why I made the comment about whether or not it was "made to look embroidered" and yours IS made to look embroidered! That is some sort of insignia. I have never seen an attachment on the back like that before though. And in terms of posting here, I normally report posts like this to be moved, because when I click on this section of the forum I want to see finds, not whatzits. There may be more views here, but there are folks who ID finds who PRIMARILY view the What Is It? section, not this one. So you may get more replies here, but you will not get more quality ideas about the ID of your finds in this section.
