in 1773 that would be carlos the III (third) --time frame he was the king of spain during the time frame that the "bust" type coins came out in 1772 to till his death in 1788 -- he started the "bust"
type coins in 1772 .--- size wize looks like it might be a 1/2 reale most likely --

I believe it should read Carolus, rather than Carolinus. Odd that it doesn't have the III after it.

could they just be worn off? it is not unusual for these coins to have a ton of wear on them. btw, did you dig it?

yes red.. dug it yesterday.. you have to be right..i put it under the correct light, and a good mag glass.. but no sign there was anything ever there....

these coins typically had massive heavy wear on them --- they were very commonly used here in the states as money -- it was equal to about 5 cents -- it would get you a light meal back then and was highly used by travellers. it was the smallest of the silver coins --- of its time, I have a 1778 one that I selling to bootybay . thats how I know about them --
