I found this in a farm field today. At first I thought it was trash but after cleaning it I saw what looked like a cross, and the overall shape/design made me think Spanish cob but I wasn't aware they could be this small. Can anyone confirm if that's actually what this is. Thanks

Yep, its a cob. I have some small ones just like that. lets see the flip side. :headbang:

Maybe a clipped Potosi?

Perhaps a clipped 1/2? They also came in other denominations but I leave that to the experts like Don

Congrats on an awesome find!!!

Thanks for the replies. Here are a couple pics of the reverse. There's definitely something there but not enough for me to even guess what it is.

Awesome COB recovery! :occasion14:

Never through anything away till its washed off for sure:laughing7:

Wow that's smaller than Roosevelt's head! Nice recovery!

Cobs are clipped to weight at the mint.
If your coin exceeds 3.43 grams, it isn't a 1 R.
If your coin exceeds 1.72 grams, it isn't a 1/2 R.
The reverse of your coin appears to be part of a monogram (initials of the king)
Both Felipe and Carlos minted 1/2 R with their monogram on the reverse.
You might look in that direction.

bit.jpg heres mine - they called these a "bit" ..you could supposedly get a mug of grog or ale with one
WTG on yours :icon_thumleft:

Likely a Carlos II 1/2 Real that's been clipped, produced from 1665 โ€” 1700.
Buccaneers like Henry Every would have been very familiar with this kind of coin,
in fact I would bet yours once belonged to a pirate - for at least a little while anyway, :skullflag::treasurechest::icon_pirat:
:D

I'm always looking for coin pieces, no luck yet, came close yesterday (sort of) Nice find, it's on my bucket list too.

Congrats on this find! Cool to learn about these from this post.

Congrats on a sweet find!

Assuming it's a Carlos II 1/2R from the Mexico City mint, we can tighten the date up a little more since that coin was only minted during the years 1668 through 1697; though his reign was between 1665 and 1700. The fineness was .931 silver. He was the last monarch of the Hapsburg dynasty.
