Hi there, I'm new in the site although I have been visiting it for some time now. Great forums!

I would appreciate your help to identify what it looks like a small cannon. I found it only partially buried in the crop fields of an abandon hacienda near the coast of the island of Tenerife (Canary Islands). The hacienda dates from the XVII century and its now in ruins. It definitively made of iron, it measures about 30 by 6 inches (background tiles are 12x12 inches) and weights about 30 pounds.

Any help will be very appreciated, cheers!!

If it originally measured less than 1M in length and with a bore diameter of up to 3.5CM, it probably was a swivel cannon.
From what country? Hard telling in that condition unless there are marking on what is left.

photographs from different angles would help. I thought at first it was the cradle of a wrought-iron swivel gun, but the iron looks as though it is cast rather than wrought.

It sure looks like a cannon barrel, but it's lacking trunnions, even for a swivel gun, it needs trunnions to hold it in place.

If it is a barrel the trunnions could be in the missing sections. But in that case there should be a touchhole left in the breech section.

Yeah, I got to thinking about that after I posted. For those that might not know, here are a couple of pictures showing the trunnions on a cannon barrel. They are the part that is sticking out at an angle to the barrel.

And this is a swivel gun, showing yoke and trunnions.

I agree, there should be evidence of a touch hole near the breech.

Thanks guys.
There is no sings of trunnions or a touch hole. I guess there were in the missing sections.
The barrel has longitudinal striations in the outside, its not easy to see them in the pictures. Not sure if there were there originally or if they were formed during the breakdown process.
I dont know how to tell if it is cast or wrought.
The barrel seems have a constant diameter in the outside, rather than a conical shape like most swivel cannons. The internal diameter is about 5.5 inch (14 cm).
I'm attaching a few more picks hopping it helps. The ruler is in cm. I made a fake cannon ball for illustration.

5 inch bore suggests an awful lot of metal has been lost, given the length. A swivel gun would have a bore of only 1- 2 inches. Even a 6 pounder would only be about 3 1/2 inches.

I'm thinking fence or gate post. Not cannon...

I think I coming to the same opinion, DCM, particularly as it was found in a field. Just seems too thin-walled to be a cannon.
