Picked this up today at a local vintage clothing and antique shop. Vendor had it ID'd as a snuff tin, which I'm sure it is. It's definitely "trench art," but I'm having difficulty narrowing down the age. The eagle is vaguely similar in style to the eagle on a CW Union Army breast plate, but if "83" is a date, that puts it nearly 20 years after the end of the American Civil War. The chevrons beneath the eagle resemble US Army corporal chevrons from the mid-late 1800's. Any opinions would be helpful. Thanks!

Thanks! I initially passed on it, but changed my mind a few hours later. Glad now that I did.

8 3 could be unit, i.e. 8th infantry 3rd Division (just making this unit up)

when did they change corporal stripes from pointing down to pointing up?

There was an 8th infantry in the civil war as well. Cool item, good luck :icon_thumright:
