South Louisiana Indian Finds

I'm new to the site but I love the all the post and great finds!! I spend a lot of time on the water down here and I recently discovered a few shell mounds and started finding pieces of pottery and bones that appear to be types of tools some with designs on them. Please let me know any info on these please!!!

Congratulations on finding the mounds. The potsherds are always interesting. I like to compare designs with what I find.

I may see a bone or two that show cut marks or scratches and most look as though they were broken/split for their marrow. I see many similar pieces at the site I hunt but I'm not seeing any bone tools or attracts.

Thanks. I just assumed the ones that are pointed were used for maybe designing the pottery and some looked like they could be used as a spoon/scoop. Didn't realize the bones were split for the marrow, interesting! I will post some close up pictures of the decorated bone I found and some other interesting ones!

Cool finds. Your stuff looks exactly like the material in the middens here in south east central Florida. Along the Indian river lagoon. I see a couple deer ulna (legbone) pieces in there.they were the common bone used for making bone pins and points. When just a nub is left like that.. that's probably what was done.

The thin bone piece may have been an awl or a tool or some sort. The other pieces look like what's was left after getting the piece they were going to work into a tool.

There were awls made here too. But that piece in my photo is a bone pin. The average tool kit here is slightly different than out west.

The fact that that one is blond is a bit rare as most are found in tanic water. There are a lot of examples here.. www.prehistoricflorida.com

Yea... I know. Its a long story but making it all illegal was in big part due to jerkys with dollar signs in their eyes using the internet.
