South Carolina's Lowlands Button - What Is It?

I cleaned this down from being a ball of diamond hard rust.

It was some time before I discovered it even was a button.

Probably a common button but I'm not into buttons.

My eyes are shot but that looks like about a War of 1812 era button, perhaps a tad later(1814-1821), but not much? Could have had a letter in the shield of A, which would make it an Artillery button. Nice find and good cleaning job on a encased button!

Thanks much Don. I nearly threw this one away thinking it was just a piece of rusty junk.

I wish I had taken a picture of it in dug condition.

I may remove the Ren Wax and soak it in WD40 for a few months to see if an A can be brought out or perhaps more lettering on the backside.

Im not 100% sure on the era, but being a one piece like that it seems to be closest to the 1814-1821 buttons, but I could be wrong, anyway, yes, whatever you want to do to hopefully bring out more detail, have at it.

The Backmark on that type of 1 piece a lot of times has words like, PLATED, TREBLE GILT, BEST GILT, GILT and similar quality marks, I don't think it has true backmark of a company on it.

I don't have any 1-piece eagles in my collection, so BRAVO! That's a keeper for sure.

Nice button can't wait to see it cleaned up. Like some others said it is most likely post War of 1812. The artillery buttons from that era all depicted an eagle sitting on top of a cannon. The style changed in 1821 with an A on a breastplate.
