I found this button in Orangeburg, South Carolina next to an old building in a trench that had been dug. The trench was about 4 feet deep by 2 feet and I found it in the wall of it about 3 1/2 feet down and 5 inches in the wall. It is made of either brass or copper. On the front there is a man with a top hat, is holding some sort of stick, he seems to be naked exept for a vest, and is leaning against a stone wall or something. on the back there is only 2 little prongs that have been broken off that to me suggests that it was a button of some kind! Any information would be greatly appreciated thanks.

newnan76... welcome to TreasureNet... :)

That is an intersting piece... I wonder if it was a button or a decorative tack of some type...

What era are other pieces you have dug from that area?

I think leather decoration rather than button.

Possibly a button from a lamplighters frock?
