weight -- say net or fishing -- or maybe just a small part of a sounding lead

I'd also have to say part of a very old fishing net or maybe even a marker buoy. Still a neat find. I've got one that is about as big as an axe head .

Hey Moe... it is a fishing lead, but most likely a very old fishing lead none the less. Did you find it inshore from a wreck? That may help you associate how old it may be... Cool find. I recovered one inshore from the 1715 Fleet wrecks myself and it was a fishing weight. I have also recovered a small lead sounding weight and a very large (24lbs.) sounding weight from the 1715 Fleet. The sounding weights typically will have a divit in the base where a sample of the ocean bottom can be recovered at the same time as checking depth.

I agree that it is probably an old fishing lead.

Thanks for the replies!
