Do you mean an item like the one I've posted? If yes, then no it is not always worth $100. It is only worth the value of the silver contained which is 4 ounces in this case or roughly $60-$65 currently. These items are not made by the U.S. Government therefore they are not currency.

If you are talking about a different item, then please explain.

been to a couple of jewelery/store pawn shops that sell proofs [ gold \silver eagles] at almost what they sell regular eagles at. Needless to say they dont often have them or keep them long. Was just at a one of them and they were selling a regular eagle at spot.

The point is unless your buying proofs because you like how they look , if things get worse they wont fetch such a premium.
 

True but as disaster money goes, the Silver Eagle or Maple Leaf coins are the easiest to use and more difficult to counterfit than a bar.

So basically put, when the $Hi% hits the fan and you need to buy something. Just about anyone will accept a silver eagle, a morgan dollar, silver junk coin etc over a bar of who knows what's in it.
