For a couple of cold, cold months, I've been reading the excellent posts of our friends out East, digging in their nice sandy-soft soil and pulling out wonderful colonial coins and civil war artifacts. I have to admit I am mucho envious, and sitting here in my mid-western house looking at my detector while other detectorists are out braving sub-freezing temps was making me feel most unmanly. Yesterday, I received an excellent boost to my morale, a new Minelab X-terra 705. I had to get out and give it a try, knowing that the East coasters are currently being buried under several feet of snow in a wicked storm, and we have only 1 inch and 28 balmy degrees F. I headed to the neighborhood tot lot to give the 705 its first run, with my folding army surplus shovel in hand. Unfortunately, the wood chips that covered the lot were frozen so hard that they resisted even my most energetic shovel stomps. In the end, I didn't really get to give the new 705 much of a workout, and I found only 14 cents. But oh, that feeling...in spite of the numbing wind and the pitiful finds...I fed the addiction, and I think I can make it another month or so until the thaw. HH!
