My son-in-law went with me metal detecting and now wants to buy one of his own. I was hoping that I could pass on some advice of which one he should get. He has around $400 to spend and will be using it at parks and maybe a few beaches. I was thinking the coinmaster GT would be a good one for him to start out with. But I know minelabs have some really good detector. I like that whites are made in the USA, but I'm new to metal detecting and still learning. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

- Whatever he decides - please consider having him buy it from one of

I will pass on your number to him Wayne. I'm not sure if he has made his mind up on what one he is wanting. My girlfriend has the coinmaster that he used and was going a little discourage on digging so many pull tabs. I'm using a whites MXT 300 and still learning it, but starting to get the hang of it. If you have any tips for me it would be appreciated. I have a 12" coil that came with it and a high trash 5.3 eclipse coil. I have been using the 5.3 coil on it because of all the trash in the parks but still digging a lot of pull tabs afraid I will miss a gold ring. Is this just a given that you have to dig all the pull tabs so you don't miss a gold ring or is there a secret I don't know?
Thanks

You can't go wrong digging all the pulltabs, of course (depending on your tolerance for frustration), but there is a very subtle difference in sound on the detectors I'm familiar with. Pulltabs have a sort of "zippy" harsh sound. Gold is often said to have a "mellow" or "soft" sound. It sounds like an urban legend but one time I remember digging a target in the pulltab range that did have a sort of soft sound to it, and somehow put the idea of gold in my head, and lo and behold, it was a gold ring.

Years ago I took all the gold rings I had found or could get my hands on and air tested them with a Garrett GTA 1000, notching in every interval that hit. When I was done I had everything from foil to dimes covered...you never can tell.

Try air testing...try a test plot...train your ears...dig the tabs...keep the nickels.

Ok thanks, I have got to we're I'm not digging everyone but like every third one. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not but it helps me.

OkProspector, you are on the right track. Small gold can ring in the foil-nickel-pull tab range. If you aren't digging pull tabs, you will miss some small gold.
