So.......sometimes you are just better off not knowing. Let me explain. I was walking a field this morning......found a few....pic attached. As I was getting back into my truck, a farm worker pulled up and asked me if I had any luck in "Copperhead". I told him I didn't know what he meant, and he shared that they call that field Copperhead because of all the copperheads they see in the field. Fortunately I didn't see any but I thanked him for the heads-up. He then asked me if I had seen the bear. When I asked what bear, he told me he had seen a very big Black bear cross "Copperhead" yesterday afternoon. He sent me the below pic he took of the track. So anyway......I'm not sure if this guy is just messing with me or if he's serious, but either way, next time I walk "Copperhead", I am going to be very careful.

Best to all......be safe......watch out for those bears and copperheads.

Definitely a BIG front black bear print. But they're more afraid of you, than you are of them. Right?

That's what they say, Papa, but if this guy crossed an open field in late afternoon, he may not be too afraid. The problem is that I found a lot of points in that field, and they are going to disc it again on Monday in prep for growing sod. No way I can stay away......I will be there on Tuesday. Hopefully the bears and snakes won't be.

I often wonder about 'alternative ' motives .

When certain folk mention 'Dangers' .

Was he the land owner ?

You got some nice pieces in one morning.

FWIW.
I still use my 1266-X (in Cooler times) it's a great machine.

Thanks for the reply, Tom Cat. No.......the owner is about 80 years old, and he leases out the fields. I know his son, which led to my permission. The guy I spoke to works for the guy who leased the land. They have six large fields......all parallel the Shenandoah River so they are flood plain. They are cutting sod right now in three of the fields, and in the next week or so, the three I have been walking will be prepped for Sod. When that happens, I go back to creek walking. As for machines, I love my Fischer as well. Found some great Civil War stuff with it......including a VMM buckle. Unfortunately, almost all of the places I dug are now neighborhoods. Northern Virginia is getting to be a very crowded place.

Excellent suggestion! I rarely go anywhere without a little .380, but that won't do much for a bear. Next time I go there I think I'll up it a bit.

First ..Sorry for the double post , tried to delete but I forgot to hit the 'post' button ..tried again 10 min later & the site would not let me delete the 2 ed one. Oh Well.

A VMM Buckle ? WOW!
Only in my dreams ( so far ).

You sound to be in a similar situation as me , IMO / Guess 70% or more of Civil War Sites here around Atlanta (esp, the NW Burbs ). have been developed 20 % protected & 10 % Private owned.

The 70's & 80 's were boom time as were the 1960 and before . I started in 1997 & relics were 'fairly ' easy to find .. barely hunted for personal issues from 2001 - 2012. ( missed A-Lot tho), Now a fired Minnie every 2-8 hours is the norm .

Boy! That 'Flood Plain' would be a dream to walk as well , esp in such a Historic Valley.

I love seeing older digs as well hence my addiction to NSCWT & American Digger Mag's + All the great Relic Books written by diggers.

So if you like post some pic's on the 'Civil War Forum' ; the folk there would love to see some of your finds.
& If not that's cool.

GL , In those creeks & on land when you get out.

GD & Thanks for answering my " NOSY" ?'s.

Thanks Davers. I have found some nice buttons as well...both Union and Confederate. I will get some up on the Civil War forum over the weekend. Been meaning to do that......I think I have some artillery fuses but I need some ID help on those. Thanks again......keep the faith......much appreciated!

No big rush on the pictures. :icon_thumright:

I have only got a handful of Rebel Buttons in 20+ years but ? then again I've dug many GS types in Confederate areas , not many supply's by July 1864 , but ill take them anytime.

OH!
There is a user TheCannonBallGuy can 99'% IMO I'D all your fuses , frags , heck any metal Civil War item for that matter .

Just PM him & he should get back with you as soon as possible.

Others on the Civil War site & 'What -is it ' site can I'd most anything. TCBG is the main man in my humble opinion he explains things where even 9th grade me can understand.:laughing7:

Good Eve.

Yeah.......it was a pretty good day......until he told me about the copperheads and bear. You know.......I'm ok either way. If it was a joke, he got me with a good one. If not, he told me something that could save my butt. I'll see him on Monday and ask him about it. In all honesty, sometimes we get lazy walking these fields. This was a good reminder to stay alert and always be aware of your surroundings. Thanks for the response Arrow......much appreciated.

Thanks Davers. I've actual messaged the Cannon Ball guy about some unusual canister plates and balls I have found. He got right back to me and was very helpful. Thanks for the other connections as well. This is a great site.......very glad I found it. I really appreciate all the guidance you have provided.

Sadly you have more to fear from the people you pass driving to & from your site. How many bear attacks or snake bites do you hear about? How many attacks & murders by people do you hear about? Personally I would feel safer in that field than a public place. Still always pays to keep your eyes open. Nice finds.

Woman runs to car to escape bear. Bear says "aw, c'mon, I can open doors!"

My sister in law lives way up in the mountains near lake Tahoe. They had visitors who brought a bunch of food for the trip. They spent the night & next morning the little rental car had smashed in windows & bears feasted until the food was gone. Seats ect. all torn up.
