This was an interesting discovery I had today but I am not sure what it is? I would assume it is brass. The area I found it in has had colonial and civil war activity. Thanks in advance!

Its best not to clean too much. Patina is actually desirable because it helps authenticate an item as being old as opposed to a reproduction..
