Went to the Brimfield antique show today in Brimfield Mass. Picked up several great finds but this one felt special. A hogge money shilling. I know they are rare and copies have been made but this one just seems different and maybe the real deal. I've pulled out many old coppers out of the ground and all have that flat dullness to all or parts of the coin. Plus the hole is a common thing on old coin money. It's on a thin planchette like the originals. I'm no coin expert so I might go see the coin person at Skinners near Boston. Good luck! To me it looks like it was sand cast but it could just be the way the picture looks.

Thanks JD. From some of my research, I've read that the original planchettes were never smooth to begin with. Many of them were silvered after being struck but would wear off very quickly. If it's authentic, it dates 1616. I know statistically it stands a good chance of being an older copy and that's probably the case. But one can dream! The ones that have all sold at auction are far from perfect and some are pretty rough. The pictures don't really show that it looks like it spent some time in the ground.

I can't add anything, but I sure hope it pans out in your favor.

I'm leaning towards fake but here's to hoping!!

Coin Value: Bermuda Sommer Islands Hogge Pence and Shilling (Fakes are possible) 1616

Take a look at example G

I saw that same site late last night. I took a little closer and noticed a similar mark on the ship from sample G and mine is the same. My dreams are crushed! [emoji24] [emoji38]. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted and I only paid $1.00 for it. I did pick up some other cool " real" stuff like some nice coin silver and early English sterling for my collection. I'll try to post some of that on another post later.
