somebody's dumps in a sealed 'BRINKS' box??? + latest purchases

hey guys
something weird happened today. i picked up 4 boxes of halves from my bank, just opened 1 so far and it's weird. the box (brinks) was sealed with the brown tape and everything but i think it's somebody's dumps. the rolls all look like they're CWR as one end is crimped very loose and some were literally open. ALL ROLLS in the box were like that. that is very annoying. i may be wrong since i did find 1 69-D in the box but i didn't notice it checking the rims, but only when i went through the coins 1 by 1. the rim was almost orange, not like the usual silver rims. but i still think i got somebody's dump. not cool :( i wonder, if someone resealed the box, how did it get back to the bank/brinks?? did it ever happen to anyone else?

on a positive note, i made a few good purchases this week:

1. bought 2 rolls of 1993 SAE at $515 each ($25.75 ea. !!) 2 days ago when silver was at like 26.80. pretty happy with it since it was $1+ below melt, and with silver touching $28

2. bought a 30-coin set of franklin halves (almost complete, missing 1 coin only) for $275, or $9.16 each.

3. bought $9.10 in silver dimes (mix of merc's and jeff's) for $172.90 - (19x face) from an old guy that came to my coin dealer the same time i was there. dealer was paying 17x, guy didn't sell, i gave him 19x (my dealer said he was cool with me "stealing" his costumer lol)

you guys have a great weekend! and HH

A couple of years ago I was in the middle of a silver vein from Loomis. One week I pick up 8 boxes sealed from Loomis with a smile on my face. I open them to find they are all full of hand rolled dumps. With the middle coin of the roll marked T in all 400 rolls. I didn't know that was possible and have not seen it since.

It happens from time to time. Bank tellers get lazy, Brinks get lazy, etc. Tellers are supposed to bag the coin to be sent off to be counted/credited. Sometimes, the tellers will send back the coin still in rolls in the bag. Brinks looks at the mess, and will just box them up. Pass the trash.

This has happens quite a bit to me here in Florida. I had literally $9,000 in a row (3*$3,000) of boxes that were the exact same, between two people (one person marked the wrapper with a pen and one with a circle. I talked to my bank and now they are nice and open the boxes when I come to pick them up and if they are opened and re-wrapped on one end they just send em back (today's $1,000 were obviously opened even though they were in a bank-sealed box).

How did you get 1993 eagles at $25.75 each. That's hell of a deal. Who's your dealer? I will buy him out at that price.

I get rerolls all the time with Brinks. Usually have a purple stripe on roll. I just take them and dump them after I open them. I had them send a few boxes back, but Brinks just retapes them and sends them back out.

hey
it's not a dealer. it's a guy from craigslist. bought a roll from him once for $540 (or $27 per) when silver was 28.50 and told him to call me if he gets more. he now comes to me with a roll or 2 every 10 days or so. he told me he has more but he wants to sell them slowly.
i hope he keeps selling to me..

That sounds quite fishy on his behalf, not yours. Wonder where he got them from????????? If he had them for a while then he obviously knows that Silver Eagles carry a premium right now and he should know what spot is. I would be very careful with this person, all that he has to do is get caught and point the finger at you, you lose everything you bought.

On the flip side, the guy could be a complete and utter idiot. :dontknow:

why would i lose everything i bought? do i really have to do a research on everything i buy on craigslist?
he came to me, i paid him, end of story. i don't think anyone can possibly ask me to prove what i bought was not stolen or something. it is not of my responsibility to do so.
and even if so, guy has no proof that i bought from him.
my main concern when i first bought from him was that they were fake. since i tested and weighed them and everything was ok - i'm okay with that.

That's a great deal on the eagles. Why is it that everything I see on Craigslist is bloated and firm in price?

No, you don't have to do research on all items on Craigslist but if something seems to good to be true.
And yes, you would have to forfeit what you bought, you would be in possession of stolen property.
All they need is a search warrant, not trying to be a dream buster but the guy had to get them some place. Now he could have bought them in 1993 when Silver Eagles were alot less.

You just never know nowadays.

I've had boxes like that, sometimes I think that the rolling machine at brinks is just off and it screwed up most of the rolls and didn't roll them completely. Found a couple silver in the rolls so I knew they'd not been searched.

Re: somebody's dumps in a sealed 'BRINKS' box??? + latest purchases

Just FYI, silver eagles have a premium. The government charges dealers something like $1.50 to $2.00 over spot price to sell to dealers and dealers will have to buy in large quantities to get them. There's no way a dealer would sell you an eagle for spot price or less. That is a fact. There may be some pawn shop guys who don't order them from the government & have paid extremely low price from an unknowing seller that might sell for less than spot price but other than that, no coin dealer would sell for less than spot on eagles. If you know of any like I said, I will buy him out.
