Nice Bill! I have a question, Is that shredded straw you put down for weed & moisture control.
Yes the straw works very nice helping to keep moisture and reduce weeds .I try at times to keep it a inch or so away from the plants when possible
I always had a weed problem around the fence borders but the walker’s low catmint is so nice stopping them.It spreads so nice produces beautiful purple blooms attracts bees butterfly and hummingbirds etc and I think perhaps it helps keep the animals outside .I highly recommend it.
Good luck

Great looking garden Bill. Nice clean beds. The straw sure helps with weed control and you can just till it into the soil at season end. Nice.

Your use of catmint around the perimeter is a good idea. I’m going to try it around my garden.

Thanks Bill,
Mike
Mike the Walkers Low is so nice.you will definitely be happy with it
Along with the shredded straw. Its just so amazing as I always struggled with weeds.
I cut the garlic

I went out and bought some shredded straw today and give it a try. My garden is a lot smaller but I'm tired of pulling weeds. Do you till the straw into the ground in fall?

Thanks for the reply I used to till but found it caused more weeds so I don’t for the last couple years.I don’t completely get rid of all weeds and I might take a hoe and scrap a little on the ground and every Spring I’ll get new straw and apply it over the old .What really helps is make raised beds and I add good garden soil mix from the garden center and add a some compost and mix it up before planting
Tomato tone and egg shells and marigold flowers really help also
Last year we got over 1000 tomatoes mainly for sauce San Marzano and Roma because we planted to many plants.if you like to make sauce get a mill and it separates the skin ..seeds etc
And weeds were always a problem on the borders and the walkers low will eliminate that
I’m still learning and I’m glad we can share ideas
I found to wear safety glasses when putting the straw in as it blows all over an water spray after

I cut the garlic scapes and probably have to wait a few weeks before I pull them.I’m not sure if I still need to water

Nice garden Bill and a good job on the raised beds!
For my first attempt I think it turned out good..
For many years with my work schedule I never did much gardening so i finally decided to put a nice one in.It’s very expensive with cedar..fencing etc..but lately everything is.
So far it’s going good I wish you lived closer as I would bring you over some
Take care

I still haven't put a garden in and each year I keep thinking I will. Maybe I'll at least pickup some tomatoe plants this week.
Driving 100 miles a day 5-6 days a week for 25 plus years made me feel the same way
Try to start putting it in and you will be rewarded
I’m getting my feet wet learning also if you have questions I will try to help

Hello Bill and other fellow gardeners , Bill your gardens looking good but I wanted to warn you about the use of Straw in the garden . Straw , hay , and livestock manure from animals that eat the hay all run the risk of being contaminated with broad leaf herbicide . this is used to keep weeds out of the fields and will wreck your garden for years if you happen to apply such materials to your garden . not happened yet doesn't mean it won't . look up Grazon contamination , Grazon has a half life of 3 years and will wreck your garden plot. a safer mulching material is arborist wood chips .

Real nice. In my opinion, raised beds are the way to go. I have seen some designs where 55gal. plastic drums, split lengthwise, and framed in 4x4’s to a height that allows the tending of plants to be done at a waist high level. Greatly aids gardeners experiencing back or leg issues. Fortunately there many easily attainable resources for individuals looking to participate in such an important activity. Reward follows effort…..even nicer when the rewards are fresh and tasty.
