I'm usually pretty good with old tools, but Im stumped. It obviously had a handle, and my guess is that it would've been used in conjunction with a sledgehammer to split wood. First you would split with the thin part, then rotate the tool 90 degrees to widen the split. Now you can test this theory by putting a handle on it and trying it out.
