Dont know the age but the hole in the top looks like it has dangled and swung for a good amount of time do to the egg shape wear.

In terms of the wear, my first thought was, "yeah, dangled.. or pulled." My favorite theory is some sort of 1920s brass+enamel zipper pull, possible for a bag/purse. But here's something else that might intrigue you as being a more fun possibility:
