Some of you may know that I'm relatively new to artifact hunting. A couple of weeks ago I was very excited to find my first point. Since then I have been out three times. The first time was at a new place and I found this:

Then RichPA and I went for a little hunt and he ended up finding a scraper and I found a hammer stone. I have never been to a place that was so littered with flakes. We both collected some flakes that were either unusual or we didn't have in our collections. The hammer stone has been broken by the plow but it's a find none-the-less. A picture of it will be coming soon.

Then a few days ago I went to another new place. I walked for about 2 1/2 hours and found three artifacts.

Welcome to the site and welcome to the hobby. I distinctly remember early in my hunting career (maybe my 2nd or 3rd productive hunt) where I found a nice stemmed birdpoint, a very well made broken Motley and some other broken stuff and finished the day thinking "I bet no one else hunting today had a better day than me". It's a great feeling getting starting and realizing all that is out there to be found.

Nice to meet up with you. I still think the point in the first pic is a table rock or something similar in the late archaic cluster. Too bad the pics don't show the big flaking as seen in person. That piece of banded slate you found was especially appealing. Possibly part of a bannerstone. I plan to hit that cornfield early early tommorrow before the footprints.

Nice to see those other finds from the local area. Good luck on future hunts.

Hey you guys shared a hunt? Thats cool. Its always hard to show an artifact in a picture. Nice finds. I like the fishtail one.
Happy huntin

It really was cool going on a hunt with some
body else. That way you can kind of feed off of one another and narrow things down. Two heads are better than one. Thanks Rich.

The artifact that looks like a sunfish is a hafted scraper. It looks like it's twisted. Really cool piece.

it looks kinda like a point but you might be right about the scraper idea
are you sure it's a scraper ?

Hi Jaron. Welcome to artifacts-T-net.
I feel your excitement finding your first few points. makes me smile, reminds me of when i found mine. Actually I jumped up n down for 20 mins..lol. Its a great feelin isn't it..
Well you have done real good.

Good luck for your next hunt..

Molly.

Larson - No. I'm not sure that it's a scraper. But a scraper is the only thing that I can think of that it could be. If you, or anyone else for that matter, thinks that I typed something incorrectly please speak up. I'm in no way saying that I know what I'm doing. I look at books and on the net to see what typed artifacts look closest to the ones I have. That's about it at this point. But I'm learning a lot right now and trying to soak it all in. And man is there a lot to learn.

It's really hard to properly describe a point/scraper just by pushing buttons on a keyboard. It's also hard to photograph the artifact with enough minute detail that you can see without an explanation. But I'm gonna try.

This is the reason I say it looks twisted:
101_4390.jpg

This is a picture of the back of the artifact. The base forms one line and the sides of the point/scraper forms another line forming an "X". Do you see what I mean?

This is a pic of the front of the artifact. Do you see how the tip of it dips down in relation to the sides? The tooth pick is positioned at the very tip of the artifact.

The next picture is one side of the artifact. The base and the tip are on one plain and the side dips down from the base and comes back up to the tip. The tooth pick is on the very edge of the side.

This next picture is of the opposite side of it. On this side the dip is a lot less noticeable but there's still a slight one. Once again the tooth pick is on the very edge.

Also, the base and the notches are ground.

Ok. I described this piece of rock as best as I can think of. I really don't know what it is for certain. If anyone can shed some light on this thing it would really make my day.

I can't see the phtobucket pictures, but is the twisted look maybe due to being heavily resharpend on each side? i know we found a knife very worn that had a great twist to it. I don't know much, so hopefully an expert will come along and explain your twist. Welcome!

Sorry. Can you see them now? I moved them and the pictures went away. I moved them back so I hope it works.

Thanks. Glad they're up again. And this point being resharpened many times is also a very good possibility. Something I didn't think of. Thanks again.
