Me and my cousin were at yankee jims this past weekend and we we started to dig in this one spot that had normal looking gravel at first. When we started to dig down more about a foot down the dirt got to a red color with a weird texture to it...not sandy and almost like that stuff you use to put on the ground to push broom and get the dirt and stuff...kinda like that texture. When we added water to it it is like clay. Anyways we dug up 4 bucket fulls and dug out a boil hole that was filled with that dirt...had some gold in it and there's more of that red dirt there. Its the first time that I have seen it in that area and was wondering why or what?

Could it be stained with either Iron or Alge? Hard to tell without being able to see it. How does it act when mixed with water for extraction? You could test it with bleach and Super Iron Out (sio) which you can get at WallyWorld. I use SIO for cleaning crystal samples and it does a super job of removing rust but I don't know how it would effect alge. If the color doesn't disappear with the SIO try some bleach.

When mixed with water it starts to form like clay but still loose. I wish I would have been able to take a picture but my phone was dead. Also when in the bucket you could tell it was heavier than common gravel.

Also not a lot of rock in it...maybe a few pebbles and some 1/2" size here and there...once we figured that out we stopped classifying

"In the general area" there is an Establishment called "The Red Dirt Saloon" indicating the dirt is typical for the generic area. As has been suggested above it is likely iron(rust) content still, it is an interesting color. Speaking of color, various minerals are used for pigments in various products: paints, plastics and the like..........................63bkpkr
