Some steel.....silver, an indian, and gold!!

I had two hrs to do a little fishin. Off to the never ending spot. I got a very strange two tone. You know....one like you stand there going back and forth trying to decide just what's beneath the coil lol. What I thought was a steel cap, turned out to be steel with a 1944 merc in it. I have no clue what it is. Maybe a pendant? So I washed it off and the back side is funky. Any ideas how to get it off? Next I found a small gold ear ring. Then a 1864 Indian head penny in great shape! Any suggestions how to get the crap off the dime....I'm all ears.

I have to be honest. That small 6x8 SEF coil on my E-trac really is impressive how it separates the different metals. That merc just confirmed it lol.

When you sent me that picture earlier this evening I was stunned... a Merc completely encased on one side plus the rim in iron.... and the Etrac was able to convince you to dig! How cool is that!

Too bad the IH was not an "L", with the excellent condition of it. Usually those earlier Indians are toasted like large coppers.

Keep up the good work. You sure are having fun with that new toy.

You might want to post your Merc on the preservation forum. I'm not sure if Naval jelly or some other rust remover would be the way to go, but you need to find something strong enough to remove the rust by soaking but not damage the silver. Any scrubbing could cause the rust to embed in the dime or scratch it as you move it around.

i found an slq that was in a hole with a pocket knife and there was a big chunk of rust on the back of the coin that i couldnt get off. i electrolosis it a few times and rubbed with baking soda and i got some of it off but most of it remained. eventually what got it off was letting it soak in vinegar for a while
