I found this barrel shaped lead piece in an area i had found musket ball previously

is this some kind of trans bullet from musket ball to mini ball?

approx 3/4 long by 5/8 diameter , both ends convex, one end with small concave center

Sometimes if somebody ran out of lead, they would take a larger musket ball and make it like the one you found until it fit down the barrel. It gave them one more shot.

that would be a rare find if it was reused

It's difficult to tell if this is a round ball or possibly a 'cross-over' to what would later become a modern bullet. :icon_scratch:

I primarily detect old home sites and farm fields and I often find lead of all shapes and sizes on these sites.

A good friend of mine told me once that, "lead is your friend on homestead sites", mainly because you then know you're detecting in the right area.

thank you,

the long side the roundness is made from many flat surfaces, the depression on one of the convex ends could be from hammer action

Early deer slug maybe?

I go with deer slug. See if it fits a shotgun.
